Other Features

  • Audio system: three microphones (up from 2) one on the bottom, one on the front, and one on the back.
  • Speaker now has 5 magnets, up from two, which is apparently better. Also uses 20% less space.
  • Wideband fills up more of the frequency spectrum and makes voices sound more natural, Schiller says. 20 carriers will support this, including Orange in the UK. No word on U.S. carriers.

New Connector Information:
  • The iPhone has used the iPod 30 pin connector, which launched in 2003. Served us well for almost a decade, Schiller says. Many things we do over the wire we now do wirelessly, he adds.
  • Now we have Thunderbolt (the connector) and lightning.
  • All-digital, 8-signal design, has an "Adaptive interface."
  • Can be plugged in in either direction. 80% smaller -- huge difference, Schiller says.
  • That 30-pin connector has been around since 2003: nearly a decade.
  • 30 pin to Lightning adapter will let you plug in your 30 pin connector and use with a Lightning plug.

iOS 6 info
  • Schiller says iOS 6 is all set for the iPhone 5.
  • We're going to see iOS 6 running on the new iPhone.
  • iCloud tabs, which syncs up Safari bookmarks across Macs and iOS devices.
  • VIP feature in Mail.
  • You can post to Facebook via Siri. Hmm. I can imagine late-night accidents.
  • Users do that by starting out something by saying "post ______"

Looks / Feel of the new iPhone:
  • New iPhone is available in white and black.
  • The aluminum on the black is called "slate"
  • The aluminum finish is different on the white and black models: silver for white, slate for black.
  • Schiller rounding down the new features, display, LTE, A6, cameras, dock connector, iOS 6.
  • It looks like, from the side, that the new iPhone is as thin as the metal band at the center of the iPhone 4/4S.
